Effects of Surface Modified Recycled Coarse Aggregates on Concrete’s Mechanical Characteristics

Abstract Sustainable concrete using recycled coarse aggregates from construction and demolition waste is gaining popularity in the industry, but has poor mechanical characteristics due to old cement mortar adhering aggregate surfaces. This study uses two processes (abrasion treatment slurry treatment) modify surface of (RCA) minimize strength loss RCA enhance bonding properties matrix RCA. Surface-modified replaced varying percentages, ranging 0 100% 25% increments. To comprehend effects surface-modified RCA, workability, compressive strength, flexural split tensile microstructural (XRD, SEM, EDAX), modulus elasticity are evaluated. improves concrete’s characteristics, abrasion-treated significantly greater than reference up 50% replacement level, while slightly lower strength. Test findings reveal that among all modifications abrasion more effective efficient.
